On a bright but cool morning at Sincil Bank, Barton Inclusive FC (BIFC) Walking Football Team stepped onto the pitch ready to take on a series of challenging fixtures. With high expectations following an impressive previous outing, the team faced unbeaten league leaders South Lincs Steelers in their opening game.
Despite a strong defensive setup, the opposition’s experience shone through, and BIFC found themselves 2-0 down by halftime. A spirited second-half response saw the team push forward, creating chances and taking the fight to their opponents. However, the ball just wouldn’t find the back of the net. A highlight of the match was goalkeeper Tony’s outstanding penalty save, keeping the score at 2-0 until the final whistle.
Next up was a rematch against Collingham, who were joint-second in the league and had narrowly beaten BIFC 1-0 in their previous encounter. This time, however, Barton showed their character. An early setback saw them concede a soft goal after a misjudged back pass trickled over the line.
Undeterred, the team fought back, and their perseverance paid off when veteran Barry Gouldthorpe found the equaliser in dramatic fashion. His strike, slow but sure, fooled the goalkeeper and secured a well-earned draw.
Barry’s celebration, a somersault, backflip, and lengthy knee slide, was an unexpected but entertaining bonus!
Buoyed by their fightback, BIFC went into their final game against Sleaford, who had previously beaten them 2-0. The first half was an evenly matched battle, ending goalless, but Sleaford’s clinical edge in the second half saw them snatch victory with a decisive goal from their tricky number 9.
Lady Luck wasn’t on Barton’s side, but the team showed resilience, determination, and a never-give-up attitude throughout.
Despite the tough results, the squad left the pitch with their heads held high, taking pride in their performances and enjoying the camaraderie that makes walking football so special.
The team continues to make fantastic memories together, and as always, the banter and team spirit were second to none.
A special mention goes to Barry Gouldthorpe, who was named Man of the Match for his crucial equaliser and unwavering inspiration to the squad.
Well done, Baz!
A huge thank you to everyone for their effort, dedication, and support.
Barton Inclusive FC’s walking football team continues to grow, compete, and, most importantly, enjoy the beautiful game.
Here’s to the next challenge!
